How To Determine Capacity Of Trailer Axle On Tandem Trailer
Question:
Ill show my ignorance and ask: What is meant by SLR? Many references with this apparent acronym, but no where is it spelled out, that I can find. I began my research trying to determine load rating for a utility trailer that I desire to title and, the only data plate found was on one of two axles with: Dexter Axle P-21 Model SLR 3500 Pounds So, Im assuming the GVWR is at least 7,000 lbs.

I called Dexter and gave them the serial number you provided to see if we could get some information. They were unable to give me any information other than to say it was built in 1998 and came from the Georgia plant. They told me SLR is stamped on all serial tags. They told me it is an acronym for 'Static Load Rating' but it serves no purpose for a consumer.
The best way to find out what the rating is for your axle is to take the hub apart and see if you can find the part numbers on the bearings, races, or seals. If you are unable to read the numbers you can use a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 to measure the spindle where the bearings sit and also the inside diameter of the hub. This will give you the dimensions needed when ordering replacement hub components. I have attached a drawing that shows where you can find the numbers and also where you would need to measure the spindle.
