For a 2001 Dodge Ram with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector I recommend brake controller wiring harness # 3020-P and the P2 brake controller # 90885. The harness is a custom fit pigtail that will allow you to plug the controller directly into the truck. The P2 is easy to set up and use and it is reliable.
I have included a link to the instructions for the harness (diagram of functions included) but in general the white wire is ground, black is 12 volt power in, red is input from the brake switch, and blue is output to the trailer brakes.
I have also included a picture of the functions of a vehicle side 7-Way connector. Please note that there isn't a wire color standard so you have to go by the locations of the functions.
