Do Trailer Breakaway Systems Usually Power from Separate Trailer Battery

Question:

I have a 2005 gearbox 5th wheel and never noticed a separate breakaway battery for the installed switch. Would this be a separate battery or is it powered from the two 12v RV batteries used to power the RV?

Typically breakaway systems on trailers like yours will be powered from a separate smaller battery than the two larger ones you have on your trailer.

You can trace the wiring of the switch back to see where it ends, but typically the breakaway system is in a box that is somewhat near the nose of the trailer.

I attached a chart that shows how a breakaway system usually wires up as well.

I also attached a help article on trailer breakaway systems for you to check out as well.
