2 inch Hitch Recommendation for a 2002 Ford Explorer for Carrying Scooter Carrier

Question:

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer that has a one and a half inch hitch on it. I need to carry a lift with my scooter on it. My scooter weighs 85 pounds. The lift I believe is 90 pounds. Uhaul installed a 2 inch hitch converter and said that that would work. Twice now it has bent. What is the maximum amount in pounds that I can put on that 2 inch extender to make sure my lift and scooter are safe.

I am terribly sorry you got such bad advice on the use of a hitch adapter on your 2002 Ford Explorer. Hitch extenders just aren't great solutions for carrying scooter carriers since they add quite a bit of movement and leverage on the hitch.

What you will need is a 2 inch hitch that can install on your vehicle that will handle the weight of your carrier.

If you have a 4 door Explorer you will want the part # 75132 or if you have a 2 door you would want the # 75132. Both of these hitches have a 500 lb tongue weight capacity and would work well for you.

Both of these hitches will install underneath the factory hitch you have.
