Making Sure Used Trailer is Using Correct Hub
Question:
Just purchased an old trailer with that has 6 lug 8-213 hubs on it. Taking off the wheel I noticed lots of free play in the wheel. After taking off the hub and cleaning off the grease the inner bearing is 25580. The inner raceinch that goes on spindle has some free play in it. However I cannot find a bearing with a smaller inner diameter. I dont have a feeler gauge but can say the difference is about a credit card. Is this a discontinued axle spindle? Or just the wrong parts being used? The axle is round if that helps.

Expert Reply:
The Dexter # 8-213 hub uses the # 25580 inner and # LM67048 outer bearing. The inner race is # 25520 and the outer race is # LM67010. The races should NOT be loose. They fit tightly enough that they need to be driven into the hub bore.
I'd begin by checking to make sure you're using the correct hub whose bearings are a match for the spindle. Use a digital caliper like # PTW80157 and measure the surface where the inner and outer bearings ride. Where the inner bearing rides, the spindle should slightly larger than 1.750 inches. The journal surface for the outer bearing should be just larger than 1.250 inches.
If you can reply with the axle capacity (look for ID plate on axle) and the dimensions you get from your spindles, we'll be able to determine if you're using a hub whose bearings are compatible with your spindle.
