How to Determine B&W Companion Hitch Height and Position in Bed of 2014 Ram 2500 Long Bed
Question:
Just ready to install companion hitch and Im a little confused in the socket post. I looked under my truck and cannot decide if the gooseneck socket is ahead or directly over my axle so that I know which hole position to use? 2014 Ram 2500 long bed crew cab diesel. Help please if you can

To find out where the socket post lies in regard to the rear axle, have a helper stand in the truck bed and hold a broomstick in the gooseneck hitch with the ball removed. You can stand beside the truck, and get a good idea of how far forward of the axle center line the hitch ball will be.
Because you've got a long bed, you won't have any worries about clearance between the rear of the truck cab and the front of the fifth wheel. Use the setting that places the fifth wheel hitch head at the proper height. With the trailer level, you'll want the hitch set high enough so that the underside of the trailer loft has at least 6 inches of clearance above the sides of the truck bed. You'll want the hitch head installed so its sitting so it places the king pin directly over or within 2-3 inches forward of the rear axle centerline.
