Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a Ford Escape Towing a Small Trailer to Help w Sway

Question:

I need a recommendation for a trailer hitch. I have a 18foot Jayco single axle travel trailer that I am pulling with a 6 cylinder Ford Escape. Even though the Escape has a short wheelbase and is front wheel drive, it tows the camper very well. The only problem is on expressways when an 18 wheeler comes up from behind. They are causing a lot of sway. Im usually going 55-60 mph, but the trucks are doing 80+. Interestingly, passing a truck coming from the other direction on a 2 lane road causes no problem. Currently it just has a standard simple hitch with a friction type anti sway controller. The actual camper weight is 3140 lbs loaded and ready to go with an actual tounue weight of 540 lbs. Your advice is appreciated.

I would recommend going with a weight distribution system to go along with the friction sway control that you already have.

The Reese WD system part # RP66541 will fit your loaded tongue weight of 540 lbs well and will help quite a bit with sway from passing 18 wheelers. It even has a tab on the head for you to install your friction sway ball.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.

Be sure to check the owners manual of your Escape and not exceed it's towing capacities.
