Recommended Brake Controller for 2005 Toyota Tundra w/ Factory Tow Package
Question:
Howdy! I am looking for a recommendation for an electric brake controller. I have a 2005 Toyota Tundra with the factory tow package and 7 pin connector. I will be towing a trailer with a max weight of approx. 1700lbs. Thanks in advance.

Brake controllers are available in Time Delayed or Proportional types.
A proportional controller can sense how quickly the tow vehicle is braking, and will deliver just enough voltage to the trailer brakes to the trailer and the vehicle brake at the same rate. This leads to a safe, predictable braking event. Time delayed controllers will always send the same amount of pre-set voltage to the trailer brakes (will depend on how you've set the controller), whether you just tap on the brake pedal quickly or you're having a full-out panic stop.
For this reason, I recommend a proportional controller. On the lower end the spectrum price-wise, there's the Tekonsha Primus IQ, part # TK90160. The controller is easy to use and it's self leveling. The Prodigy P2, part # 90885 provides more flexibility on where the controller can be installed, and is compatible with both electric and electric over hydraulic trailer braking systems. The Prodigy P3, part # 90195 takes it a step further by offering a display that's more user friendly and 5 storable settings which can be set for trailers of different weights or for different driver's preferences.
The correct controller for you will depend on what and how often you tow, as well as the features you're looking for. If you're towing a basic trailer with electric brakes, the Primus would be all the controller you'd need. If you're towing a more than one trailer, and one of them is a boat trailer or a fifth wheel that uses an electric over hydraulic brake system, the P2 would be a good choice.
If you tow multiple trailers, or you just want something that's very easy to use that would allow you to continuously monitor the performance of your trailer braking system with just a glance, the P3 is the controller for you.
In addition to the controller, you'll need the # 3040-P brake controller wiring adapter.
