Roof Kayak Carrier Recommendations for a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer
Question:
I have a 05 Mercury Mountaineer V8 and 2 kayaks. Can I use two sets of the carrier ? One set on each side of the suv. If using only one set, its a pretty far reach for me to tie one kayak to the back side of the carrier, while the front side of the carrier I could reach with no problem.

Provided that there is room enough on the crossbars on your 2005 Mercury Mountaineer then yes, you could use 2 of the Yakima JayLow, # Y04073. It should not be a problem on your Mountaineer but one similar carrier that I know would work is the Rhino-Rack J-Style carrier, # S512, with the add-on extension to carry a second kayak # RRS512X.
I have seen that the weight capacity of the factory roof rack on the Mountaineer is 100 pounds. Going with the Rhino-Rack carrier will reduce the amount of weight that is on the roof rack which is why I recommend it over 2 sets of JayLow carriers.
Using a tire step such as # ALL647596 makes it easier and safer to access the roof for loading and unloading and would be a nice addition to this set up. I have linked some helpful videos for you as well.
