Is a Slider 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Needed if the Trailer has an Extended Pin Box 2005 Ford F-150
Question:
I have a 05 F-150, extended cab, 6.6 ft. bed, 5.4 liter engine. I currently have a TT and using a Reese hitch purchased from you. I am looking to upgrade to a 5th wheel, rated for my 1/2 ton truck. The manufacturers rep. indicates that since this model of 5th wheel has a extended hitch pin, that I wont need to purchase the slider. That the 6.5 bed length is sufficient. I have looked at a few other 5th wheels brands that make the same claim. Can I depend on this info, as the slider would add considerable expense to my upgrade? Thanks for your response.

You can take some measurements to be certain before you commit to a 5th wheel trailer hitch. Start by measuring from the center of the 5th wheel hitch jaw to the truck cab. On your truck this will be 1-1/2 inches forward of the center of the rear axle. Next, add the length of travel of the slider (or use zero to make the calculation for a stationary hitch). The square tube sliders travel 10 inches, round tubes travel 12 inches.
Next, measure the width of your trailer and divide it by 2. Subtract this number from the first two you added together to get the clearance. If clearance is equal to or greater than 4 inches, then you will be able to use the 5th wheel you have chosen and safely make 90 degree turns.
Even with an extended pin box, I recommend going with a slider to be sure that the trailer does not make contact with the truck cab while turning. I have included a link to the installation details below for Installation kit, # RP50081-58. I have also included an FAQ article on 5th wheel trailers and towing.
