We carry both hydraulic and electric drum brakes for trailers in a range of sizes and for various axle weight ratings. We can help you select new brakes.
The things you'll need to confirm are the axle's weight rating, the drum size, the type of brakes (electric or hydraulic) and the mounting bolt pattern of the brake flange.
Axle capacity is usually listed on a plate or sticker right on the axle itself. Drum size can be determined by pulling one of the hub/drum assemblies and measuring it. The linked photo shows you how to measure both diameter and depth of the drum. If your brake assembly has two wires exiting it's rear side then it is an electric brake; if it has a single steel or flexible line connected then it is a hydraulic brake.
Once you know these details you can use the linked page to select drum brakes of the appropriate type, size and stopping power. At the top of the page click on your type of drum brakes, axle weight rating and drum size. For example, if you have 12 x 2-inch electric brakes, a 5-bolt flange and a 6K axle you can use Dexter # 23-459 (right side) and # 23-458 (left). If you have 10 x 2-1/4-inch hydraulic brakes with a 4-bolt mount on a 3500-lb axle then you can use # 40715 (right side) and # 40716 (left).
You will want to replace BOTH brake assemblies on the axle to ensure even stopping power.
