Does 2006 Toyota Tundra and 2008 Tacoma Use Same Brake Controller Wiring Harness
Question:
i am looking at purchasing a prodigy p3 brake control and need to know two things: 1. do you have to mount it to the dash or can you just lay in on the console? 2. i have a 2006 tundra dcsb and a 2008 tacoma dcsb. will the connection wire that came with my toyota tow package work on both vehicles i only have one connection that came with the tacoma or do they use different connection wires from the P3 to the truck? Thanks

A proportional controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 works by determining how quickly the tow vehicle is coming to a stop, and then sending the appropriate amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so that the trailer an tow vehicle brake at the same rate. If the controller isn't securely attached to the underside of the dash or the console, the internal accelerometer won't be able to get a fix on how quickly the vehicle is braking, and won't operate correctly, or at all. It's essential that the controller is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
If both the Tacoma and the Tundra came from the factory with the 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper, you can use your factory wiring pigtail with both vehicles. The factory pigtail won't wire up color for color with the pigtail, you'll want to wire it as follows:
Pigtail black wire w/ red stripe connects to black brake controller wire
Green wire with white stripe on pigtail connects to red controller wire
Brown wire on pigtail connects to white brake controller wire
Red pigtail wire connects to blue brake controller wire
The same pigtail will work with both vehicles. If you're planning on swapping the controller back and forth between vehicles as needed, I'd recommend an additional mounting bracket, part # TK5906.
I've linked you to a video showing a brake controller being installed in both vehicles.
