Troubleshooting Curt Triflex Brake Controller that Shows Voltage on Display When Brakes are Applied
Question:
I connected the Curt Controller using the plug and play harness for my vehicle. All appears to be OK. I have not connected it to my trailer yet but I have one concern. When I apply my truck brakes I get a reading on the controller ie. 6.2. Is it normal for the display to register without a trailer connected?

Sounds like the controller is thinking that a trailer is connected when there isn't one and that is why the display is reading a number.
When the brakes aren't applied what does the display read? If it's a single dot then the controller does not detect a trailer. If there are two dots then a trailer is detected.
That would indicate that the brake output circuit somewhere on the vehicle has a short somewhere that is putting a slight load on the circuit - which is telling the controller it is connected to a trailer. Try cleaning the inside and outside of the trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle as that is a common reason for this problem.
What you can also do to tell if the problem is the brake controller or the wiring is sever the brake output circuit that is leaving the controller while leaving enough room to reconnect it. If the controller still reads . . then you know the problem is internal of the controller. If that stops displaying then you know the problem is somewhere between the controller and the 7-way.
