Recommended Use of Different Tire Chains on a Modified 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

I have a 2012 Toyota 4Runner Trail edition with significant off-road modifications including a raised suspension and 285/70/17 BFGoodwrench Mud Tires with wheel spacers. The Toyota manual only recommends tire chains up to 5mm on the rear presumably because of clearance issues in the front. What are the implications of using 2 different types in pattern and mm size of tire chains for the front and rear? Im considering using a more narrow chain on the front where clearance might be a problem. Thank you.

Good news, I can help answer your questions regarding tire chains for your 2012 Toyota 4Runner.

Since you have done modifications to your vehicle, the owner's manual clearance recommendation are for the factory tires and may no longer apply. What you will want to do is measure to make sure you have clearance for the particular type of chain.

As far as the types of chains and using different patterns on different axles, it is alright. The diamond pattern will give you front to back and side to side traction, while the ladder style only provides front to back traction.

For you it will depend on if you are planning on off-roading with these chains on or just using them on the road in snowy conditions since wider tires tend to have a more difficult time getting traction in the snow. I recommend Titan Diamond Pattern Chains # TC2533 if you are just doing the everyday regular road travel. If you are planning on off-roading and have the clearance I would recommend the Titan Heavy Duty Alloy Chains # TC3229SCAM. If you end up going with the ladder style of chains we highly recommend using these with a chain adjuster # TCMA2 to help the chains fit tight to the tire and maintain tension to the chains.

I have attached a Link to all the chains that will fit your size of tire, some of our Help Articles to determine clearance, and videos of the two different styles of chains for your convenience.
