Should Boat Trailer Keel Roller Be Snugged Down So Roller Doesn't Rotate, or Should It Spin Freely

Question:

I am looking to buy a replacement Keel roller from Etrailer. Mine looks like part CE32003G-3 inch roller with same type of assembly. My question is, when I replace the roller, do I tighten the keel roller tight where it is fixed or are you suppose to let the roller turn with the boat. I have one now thats been damaged due to boat not lining up correctly when I winch it in. Just wanted to know when I install the new one, should it turn like the bow roller or tight and fixed like the one I have now which could of been installed incorrectly. Thank you

The answer to your question will depend on what purpose the roller is serving. If the roller is being used to guide the boat into place on the trailer, then you'll want it to be able to roll. If the roller is simply providing support, holding the boat static in one position, then it really doesn't matter if the roller rolls or not.
