Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2016 Subaru Outback and 2 Inch Bike Rack

Question:

I heard the factory Subaru hitch is no good for bike carriers. Can you recommend a better option for a 2016 Outback? It is a regular model not a Sport. My bike rack fits a 2 inch receiver.

For your 2016 Subaru Outback I recommend the popular Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75673. This is a Class III trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver so it will be compatible with your bike carrier. The factory Subaru hitch is a 1-1/4 inch and the problem it has is that the hitch pin hole is too close to the end of the receiver. This means that not enough of the accessory shank will be in the receiver and that can lead to damage to the bike carrier and bikes.

I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you. If you ever plan on doing some towing then you can use wiring harness # 118467 to add a 4-Way flat connector at the back.

I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
