Weight Distribution for a 2003 Ford F-150 and Forest River Vibe 221RBS

Question:

I just purchased a 221rbs Forest River Vibe and I am looking to purchase a weight distribution system with sway control. The TT has a dry weigth of 5200 and tougue weight of 650. My vehicle is a 2003 ford F150 5.4. I was looking at the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW. Would this be correct.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

If the tongue weight of 650 pounds is the gross tongue weight (with the trailer loaded and ready to tow tow) then a system rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds such as Strait-Line system # RP66074 is an excellent choice. If the tongue weight falls outside of that range let me know and I can make other recommendations. For example system # RP66083 has a tongue weight capacity range of 400 to 800 pounds. You want the total tongue weight to be as close to the middle of the range as possible.

For this system you will just need to add a ball. Use # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball. The included shank has a max rise of 7 inches and max drop of 1-1/4 inches. Other shanks are available separately if more rise or drop is needed. I have included some helpful links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
