Fuse?, Shift lever switch? Help.

If both the audible alarm and the light bulb in the Hopkins Backup Alert # HM20101VA fail to operate then this would suggest that no power is reaching the unit at all. In this case you'll want to check the van's bulb socket where the unit installs to see if there is any visible discoloration or corrosion of the contact surfaces. Even slight greenish or whitish discoloration can indicate corrosion that can interfere with signal transfer. Also check the contacts on the Hopkins alarm in the same way. You can clean off any corrosion with a spray-on contact cleaner like Caig De-Oxit and/or use a wire brush like # DW00254. Very fine (500 grit) sandpaper works too.
If you have the original bulb that came in the van or if you have a spare you can try re-installing the standard bulb into the socket. If it works then you know there is a problem in the Hopkins alarm; if it does not light up then this suggests that there is a problem in the vehicle. This could be a blown fuse or a damaged/loose wire. According to my research, in the battery junction box the fuse position 24 should have a 20-amp fuse in it that controls the reverse light circuit. You can check this fuse and replace as needed. If the shift lever switch is damaged you'll want to refer this issue to a qualified auto technician.
On the other hand, if the light bulb portion of the Hopkins alarm works, but just the alarm sound does not, then this indicates the unit is damaged and needs to be replaced.
Once your alarm is functioning again you can if you like protect its connection by using dielectric grease in the socket. This grease, such as # LT37534, helps prevent entry of moisture and dirt that can otherwise lead to corrosion issues.
