Troubleshooting Hopkins Reliance Brake Controller Displaying E1 Error Code

Question:

When I apply brakes moving the reliance digital controller reads from zero fast up to 99 and brakes lock-skid the trailers wheels. E1 is the reading sitting still no-brakes. Any suggestions please?

How do you have the controller set? Hopkins recommends making a few test runs at 20 mph. If you're locking up the brakes, hit the minus button a few times to lower the power output. Ideally, you'll want to adjust the brakes so that they're just short of locking up, which is when brakes are most effective.

The E1 error code indicates that the trailer isn't plugged in. If you're getting that code when the trailer IS plugged in, it indicates that the brake controller isn't 'reading' the trailer. This can be caused by a few things, but by far the most common cause is a damaged, dirty or corroded connector on the vehicle or on the trailer.

Check the connector on the trailer as well as the one on the tow vehicle. Clean or replace as needed. I'll link you to our Brake Controller Troubleshooting article that I hope you'll find helpful.
