Troubleshooting Hopkins Agility Brake Controller Installation in 2012 Nissan Frontier

Question:

Hello, awhile back I purchased a Hopkins Agility brake controller for my 2012 Frontier. It has been working fine until today. I have power to the unit and my trailer lights work fine however, the red light that usually comes when the trailer is hooked up does not come on now and there is no brake assist. Any ideas on what the problem may be? Thank You

If you installed the Hopkins Agility Brake Controller # HM47295 with a no-splice wiring adapter # HM47635 then it is possible that the problem is in the Frontier's 7-way socket or the trailer's 7-way plug. Corrosion on or within the trailer connectors can cause a short on the brake circuit; this would explain both the loss of the readout on the unit and the lack of braking response. A short or malfunction on the brake magnets themselves could also cause the problem.

Carefully inspect both the vehicle and trailer connectors for any signs of discoloration or corrosion. Even slight discoloration can indicate a problem severe enough to interfere with signal transmission. You can use a spray-on contact cleaner product like Caig De-Oxit to dissolve any corrosion.

Also check that the wire for the brake circuit on the trailer (often a blue wire) has no cracks or wear spots in its insulation that could be allowing a short. Check spots where the wire may have to bend or touch the frame. Repair or replace any damaged wire. The linked article will give you additional troubleshooting help.
