Brake Controller and Install Recommendation for a 2008 Ford F-150

I am looking for the appropriate brake controller for my 2008 Ford F150. I will be pulling a 1972 Apache trailer. The truck does not have the tow package and I am putting the hitch on it soon. Can you guide me on the product selection and installation?

To install a brake controller in your 2008 Ford F-150 you will need a brake controller first.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.

To install the controller you will first need the part # 3035-P. This will plug into the controller and to the port under your dash. To convert your 4-way to a 7-way will require the part # 37185 and some additional wire # 10-2-1 as well.

Follow the 4-way trailer connector wires from the trailer connector to the front of the vehicle. These wires connect to a factory plug along the frame rail, usually on the driver's side, between the back tires and the rear bumper. The factory plug should be mated to another connector which has wiring that continues back toward the bumper.

There are more wires coming from the front of the vehicle than there are coming out toward the 4-Way plug. Ford wires the front of the vehicle as if it will be manufactured with a 7-Way plug, so all the 7-Way wires are run to this connector on the frame rail. You will need to run the blue wire to the blue wire of the 7-way.
