Recommended Steps for 2015 Montana 5th Wheel Trailer to Make Entry and Exit Easier

Question:

We have a 2015 Montana 5th wheel. We gave 2 dogs that wont go down the steps on the camper, plus it is not comfortable for us to go up and down. Would the steps that extend to 39 inches be something that would fit our 5th wheel and help solve our problems?

There are two general methods to make entry and exit easier for you and your pups at your 2015 Montana 5th wheel trailer. One is to install replacement steps like the Brophy # AS04 and the other is to simply add an accessory step like Camco # CAM43676 which features adjustable height and a large 19 x 14-1/2-inch platform.

Advantages of the separate step are lower cost, that you do not have to alter your brand new trailer or potentially reduce ground clearance, and that the step can serve other purposes such as easing window washing and other general trailer maintenance. You can position the step and adjust its height so its right where you need it. Having a large and stable surface at a convenient height may encourage the dogs to enter and exit. Since this step will not have the tendency to wiggle and sway, which can occur with scissor steps, the dogs may feel safer.

If you prefer to install a new scissor step you'll need to check the width of the mounting holes for the current step and select a new unit to match those mounting points. You also want to note the clearance to the ground from the bottom of the current step when it is retracted; ideally you'll choose a new step that does not significantly reduce your ground clearance. The 18-inch-wide Brophy # AS04 scissor step that you referenced has a vertical height of 11-inches when retracted.
