Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 and 2007 Toyota Highlander
Question:
Why is the towing capacity so much higher on the 2014 Toyota Highlander than the 2007 Toyota Highlander?

Expert Reply:
The trend here lately with SUVs and trucks is to increase their towing capacities with every generation change. Most likely Highlander owners complained that they couldn't tow more in the older generations so Toyota responded by building the newer Highlanders stronger so they could tow more.
Or, it's to stay competitive in the vehicle class. If similar vehicles in same class as the Highlander can tow more Toyota would have to find a way to increase the towing capacity so that the vehicle isn't perceived as weaker.
If you have a 2014 Toyota Highlander you would want the Curt Hitch part # C13200 if you are looking to do some towing. This hitch has capacities of:
900 Pound Tongue Weight
6000 Pound Towing
If you have a 2007 Toyota Highlander you would instead want the # 13530. This hitch as the following capacities:
350 Pound Tongue Weight
3500 Pound Towing
