The P3 brake controller # 90195 might be sensing that there is power draw. The usual cause of this is a dirty or corroded trailer connector. Make sure that the connector is clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach and outside on the pins.
This could also be the reason the controller is not going to sleep. If there is power draw caused by corrosion, then the controller may think that the brakes are being applied and it will not go to sleep.
You will also want to make sure you have the brake controller connected to the correct wires on your 2009 GMC Sierra. The tow package wiring under the dash should have a red, dark blue, light blue or orange, and white wire.
White will go to white for ground
Red on the truck will go to black on the controller for 12-volt power
Dark blue on the truck will go to blue on the controller for output to the trailer brakes
The light blue or orange wire on the truck will go to the controller red wire for input from the brake switch
If you have both a light blue and an orange wire, then you will need to determine which is the correct one using a circuit tester such as # PTW2993. You need the wire that only shows power when the brake pedal is pressed and not the one that shows power if the head lights are on.
