The Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit, part # 523120-1 is designed to fit a Chevrolet Malibu from 2004 to 2008 only, and will not work on your 2012, but we do have a base plate kit that will work great for you.
I recommend part # 523145-5. When installed, and the drawbars are removed, this system is nearly invisible. These base plates are compatible with all Roadmaster tow bars.
If you are not familiar with flat-towing I have attached a helpful article that explains flat-towing and what is needed. In all, there are 5 items needed. You need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the towed vehicle, and most states now require supplemental brake systems.
The tow bar I recommend is the RoadMaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520. For safety cables I recommend part # RM-643.
The wiring I recommend for your Malibu is part # RM-154. I have attached a link to an installation video for this wiring kit on a 2012 Malibu you can check out.
For a supplemental brake system I recommend part # SM99251. You can take a look at the linked installation video for this system.
