Recommended 2-Kayak Carrier Solution for 2015 GMC Sierra Double Cab with Folding Tonneau Cover

2015 GMC Sierra Double Cab - 6ft - 6in box with a folding tonneau cover. Im looking for either a ladder Rack or a roof rack to carry two 14 ft kayaks - 150 lbs total. The truck does not have any existing roof rails. Is there anything you carry that would work for me?

Folding tonneau covers can sometimes be tough to fit along with a ladder rack since often both will use the same or similar attachment points on the tops or sides of the bed rails.

But I do have a great solution for you for transporting two 14-foot kayaks with a total weight of 150-lbs that will actually cost you a lot less than many quality ladder racks AND avoid any concerns about compatibility with your tonneau cover.

The solution I recommend is a hitch-mount load support bar. Darby offers their Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 that includes both a roof crossbar to support the front end of the kayaks and a hitch-mount load support that will suspend the rear end of the kayaks. This system has a 350-lb weight capacity which gives you a nice safety margin. Please refer to the linked photo and review video.

The T-shaped support bar measures 48-inches wide, plenty for a majority of kayaks, and the included roof rack crossbar extends from 45- to 60-inches in width. Since you're hauling two kayaks you'll just want to add a similar second foam block for the crossbar, part # MPG158.

You will need to add some type of tie-down straps to hold the two kayaks securely to the truck. We offer a range of straps such as the 10-foot Erickson Re-Tractable Ratchet Straps with Push Button Release, part # EM34416. The ratcheting handle makes tightening easy and the push-button release will get you in the water quickly.
