Best Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 800 lbs Tongue Weight
Question:
I have a 14 foot tamden axle box trailer that weighs 4400 pounds loaded, with a hitch weight of 800 pounds that I pull with a 2011 1500 Crew Cab Chevy truck. I want to get the best weight distribution hitch that you have, that will eliminate sway. I have an A frame plastic tool box on the tongue and thought the Blue Ox 1000 or 1003 would fit my needs the best, but didnt understand the difference between the two. Nor did I understand the words trunnion and underslung I would like your recomendation. Thanks

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.
Since your loaded tongue weight is 800 lbs the best system we offer that I would recommend for you is the Strait-Line part # RP66084 that has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs and features the only sway control on the market designed to fight sway before it starts. There's nothing wrong with the Blue Ox stuff, but if you are looking for the best you would want to go with a Strait-Line.
Trunnion refers to the bar style of the system. Trunnion bars are straight and mount straight to the head of the system whereas a round bar comes up through the bottom of the head. Typically trunnion is preferred due to it having higher capacities and better ground clearance.
Underslung couplers are couplers that attach to the bottom of a trailer frame.
For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
