The first thing to do before you start towing is to always check the owners manual or the car dealer for the GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating) of your vehicle. The GCVWR is the maximum allowable weight capacity for your vehicle, including the vehicle, trailer and contents.

You will need to check the hitch on your vehicle to make sure it has the correct weight capacity. Also, if you can add weight distribution to your hitch, to tow your 7,000 lb. trailer. The class or weight capacity is listed on the hitch.

The Reese Weight Distribution, # 66087, is a good choice for your Jeep Commander. It will give you 10,000 lbs. Gross Towing Weight and 800 lbs. Tongue Weight which should work well for towing your car hauler. The Strait-Line Hitch forces the trailer to stay in a straight line behind the vehicle and the Dual Cam Sway Control stops sway before it occurs.

If you need a Class III hitch for your Jeep Commander, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 75338, with a Ball Mount, # C45010, Pin and Clip, # PC3, and a hitch ball. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III hitch for your Jeep Commander has a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. and tongue weight of 750 lbs. and when you add weight distribution it will give you a weight capacity of 7,500 lbs. and tongue weight of 750 lbs.

The hitch ball size is determined by the coupler size on your trailer. If it is 2 inch coupler, you can use Tow Ready 2 inch Ball, # 19247. If it is 2-5/16 inches coupler, you can use the Tow Ready 2-5/16 inch Ball, # 63847.

The vehicle wiring harness you would need is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, # 118408, which plugs into the a connection point behind the tailights. There is no cutting or splicing of the vehicle wiring harness.

I am sending a video link of a trailer hitch installation on a 2006 Jeep Commander. Also I am sending video links to weight distribution and sway control.
