Based on my research, the owner's manual for the 2001 Ford Mustang doesn't exempt the Mustang from being flat towed, but it does state some strict parameters that need to be followed. The owner's manual states that the transmission must be placed in Neutral, a speed of 35 mph must not be exceeded, and the distance traveled must not exceed 50 miles. If a speed of 35 mph is exceeded and/or a distance of 50 miles is exceeded, then the driveshaft must be disconnected so as to not damage the transmission. The owner's manual states that Ford recommends having only a qualified technician remove and install your driveshaft.

If you still want to flat tow your Mustang, we can provide you with recommendations for a tow bar, base plate, supplemental braking system, safety cable set, and taillight kit.

For a base plate, I recommend the Roadmaster XL Base Plates Kit with Removable Arms # 466-1. This base plate will allow you to remove the arms when you are not flat towing your vehicle in order to maintain the look of your vehicle. The only style Mustang this base plate will not fit is the Cobra SVT, which does not have a base plate available.

I recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar # RM-520. This tow bar mounts directly to the hitch on your motorhome and features telescoping arms for easier hook-up and sway prevention. If you're looking for a more economically friendly option, the Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar # RM-020 is another option for you.

With either of these tow bars, you will need safety cables, such as these # RM-643 from Roadmaster. These safety chains are required by law.

The only braking system we have as a fit for your Mustang is the SMI Stay-In-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251. The Stay-In-Play DUO is a fixed system with proportional braking. A supplemental braking system will prevent unnecessary wear and tear on both your Mustang and your motor home. The motor home's brakes are not designed to put up with the extra push your towed vehicle will give when you apply your motor home's brakes. The braking system will also help you to flat tow your vehicle more safely because you are able to apply the towed vehicle's brakes.

Roadmaster offers their Standard Magnetic Tow Lights # RM-2120 so you can avoid tapping into your vehicle's wiring. These lights will mount to the trunk of your Mustang magnetically, and the wires will run from these lights up to the front of the vehicle.

To connect the lights on your towed vehicle and the wiring on the motorhome, you will want an extension that will match the connector on your motorhome. This connector may need to be hardwired to the 4-way wiring on the towing lights. I have attached a link to the extension we offer.

I have also attached some review videos of these products for you.
