Can a 12,500 Pound Brake Actuating Trailer Coupler be Used in Place of a 7,500 Pound Coupler

Question:

I just bought a used 26 foot boat with a 30 foot quick load trailer that has hydraulic surge brakes the trailer has a gross trailer waight of 7,500 the tung has a dico model 10 hydraulic tung and need to replace it I have been lookin at the titianT2478100 which is 12,500 lb rating and was wondering is it better with a braking system to to go over the 7,500 and put the 12,500 capacity tung on the trailer will it brake the same way

Expert Reply:

If you go with a higher capacity brake actuator than what the trailer requires the braking can be very aggressive. If the trailer is supposed to have a 7,500 pound capacity actuator then that is what I recommend sticking with that or going up to an 8,000 pound model such as # DM8759411.
