Parts Needed to Install 7-Way Vehicle Socket on 1991 Volvo 240 Series to Tow Travel Trailer

Question:

I am looking at wiring options for hooking up the running lights, brakes, etc for my travel trailer to my 1991 - 240 Volvo. Seems the wiring options here do not work with my travel trailer. The trailer has a seven pin connector with a large plug. What are my options for the right connection?

It sounds like your travel trailer has an RV-style 7-way blade plug, such as what is shown in the linked photo. This is a popular configuration for trailers with electric brakes and 12V power service.

You can install a mating 7-way socket on your 1991 Volvo 240 Series to provide lighting, a brake signal as well as 12V power using our brake controller installation kit # ETBC7. The kit includes a 7-way vehicle socket, wiring, circuit breakers and everything you need for installation of a brake controller like the popular and reliable Prodigy P2 # 90885. An installation video and article on the ETBC7 kit are linked for you.

You first need to install a 4-pole flat wiring harness which you'll convert to the 7-way format using the parts in the ETBC7 kit. For a 4-pole wiring harness you can use # C56175 from Curt. I recommend this harness over the other option for its lower price and higher current output, which means it will be less likely to be overloaded by your trailer's lights.

The linked article on trailer wiring might be helpful for reference.
