Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2012 Dodge Durango

Question:

I have a 2012 Durango R/T with the 7-pin connector. I have the CURT 13182 Class 3 Trailer Hitch installed and need to get a Weight Distribution hitch for a travel trailer. what are my options as my hitch is not high enough, I dont think anyway. Do you have one that is adjustable?

All you need to do is choose a weight distribution (WD) system that has a shank with enough height adjustment to allow your trailer to be level when hitched to your 2012 Dodge Durango. Trailers always tow best when level.

When we installed Curt hitch # C13182 on a 2012 Durango we found that the top of the receiver opening was 14-3/4-inches from the ground. You can refer to the linked article for illustration of how to measure the required rise you'll need to keep the trailer level when hitched. We offer many WD shanks with various height adjustment possibilities that you can view on the linked page. These are all made to the same industry standards so its okay to use one brand of shank with another brand of WD system if necessary.

A weight distribution system will be chosen based on the combined tongue weight of the fully-loaded trailer plus the weight of anything in the Druango that sits behind the rear axle, say a loaded cooler or generator. This total tongue weight (TTW) allows you to choose a system rated high enough to move some TW forward onto the front axle without being so stiff that it creates off handling. Your TTW should fall into the middle of the system's operating range.

You can use the linked page to choose a system by selecting your TTW and the type of brakes on your trailer. If you have electric brakes and a TTW of 900-lbs for example you can use the excellent Strait-Line trunnion bar system from Reese, part # RP66074. All you need to add is the hitch ball, # 19286 for a 2-5/16-inch size or # A-90 for a 2-inch, and a shank.

Since you indicated that your hitch is lower than the trailer coupler you'll want a shank with RISE rather than drop. You can use adjustable shank # RP3215 for up to 11-1/2-inches of rise.
