Converting Existing Hydraulic Drum Brakes on 2004 EZ Loader Boat Trailer to Disc Brakes

Question:

Hi, I have a 2004 EZ Loader duel axle boat bunk trailer with 14 in tires and 10 in hubs. It has 5 lug nuts and 4 bolt holes for mounting the brake hardware. I have an inertia brake with brake drums on one axle. I would like to convert them to discs since they are completely shot and non functioning. Since the bearings are original the numbers are hard to make out. The grease seal is numbered 168255TC and measures 1.69 in. The inner bearing is, I believe, L68149 and measures 1.375 in. The outter bearing I cannot make out but maybe the last 3 as 649? but it measures 1.06 in. All measurements were from a caliper and from the axle. Can you recommend a conversion kit? I have the coupling but would need all else such as the lines. the trailer is approximately 23 ft. and hauls a 21 foot center console boat. Thanks

Given the inside dimension you kindly provided, your outer bearing is a # L44649.

We have plenty of disc brake kits that would be compatible in various finishes. Going with the Kodiak # K2HR35DS in a Dactromet/Stainless Steel finish would provide maximum corrosion resistance. The kit includes the races, but the # L68149 and # L44649 bearings and # 168255TB grease seals are sold separately.

It sounds as if your current brake actuating coupler was intended for drum brakes, If that's the case, I wouldn't recommend reusing it because it wouldn't be capable of developing enough pressure to properly actuate disc brakes. The Dexter # 099-175-20 is rated for disc brakes, and features a 2 inch ball coupler as well as an electric lockout.

I've linked you to an FAQ article and an install video that I think you'll find helpful.
