Parts Needed to Modify 4 x 8 Utility Trailer to 5-Lug Hubs and Larger Wheels and Tires
Question:
I have a Redtrailer brand 4 x 8 trailer. It is 48 inches wide. I want to go from four to five lug with larger tires and wheels. Would this axle hub set be appropriate? Thanks

It is possible to change out your trailer axle, hubs, wheels and tires to different/larger types but do note that replacing the axle and hubs will not necessarily increase the trailer's capacity to carry weight. Actual trailer weight capacity is a function of many factors including the axles, hubs, wheels and tires, but also the trailer's frame and decking. Redtrailer's website shows at least five different 4 x 8 trailers so before you replace any parts you'll want to contact them with your trailer model number and VIN to be sure that your intended modifications will give you the results you're looking for.
You may be able to change your hub/tires/wheels without changing out the entire axle with a kit like # 20545I-EZ-60-10. What you'll need to do is pull a hub and note the bearings set used. You want to find the inner and outer bearing and seal part numbers - please refer to the linked photo for help with finding those part numbers. With that information you can use the linked page to choose new 5-lug hubs that use the same bearings. The bearing set must match in order for the new hubs to fit on your spindles.
The linked page has filters to let you select the type of hubs you want, either idler hubs (no brakes) or hub/drums for use with drum brakes. You can also select which of the five different 5-lug bolt patterns you want - the most common is 5-on-4-1/2-inch. An article on bolt patterns is linked too.
Let's say you want 5-on-4-1/2 bolt pattern idler hubs that use bearing # L44649 for both inner and outer bearings. Click on the appropriate axle capacity and wheel size you want to use. For a 2000-lb axle and 15-inch wheels you can use Dexter hub # 8-258-5UC1-EZ.
I also included a link to our page for pre-mounted tire/wheels where you can choose tire type, wheel diameter and bolt pattern.
