For a 1986 Chevrolet Pickup, you would need to start with a 4-Way trailer connector as your base then build from there. You can use part # HM41115 for your 4-Way connector. It connects inline with an existing harness so you will not have to splice any wires.

Once you have a properly working 4-Way on the truck, you can add on from there. If you ultimately need a 7-Way with a brake controller, you can use Brake Control Install Kit, part # ETBC7. It includes everything you need to upgrade your 4-Way to a 7-Way with 4-Way as well as install a brake controller.

The 7-Way is the most versatile trailer connector. With this connector and the proper adapter, you should be able to connect to any trailer.
