Why are Trailer Tire Ply Ratings Different than the Actual Amount of Plies

Question:

I just purchased and received 2 of these tires. On your website they are rated as 8 ply tires but it is clearly stamped on the sidewalls 5 ply. Whats up with that? Why are these supposed 8 ply tires only 5 ply?

When a tire is given a 'ply rating', it doesn't necessarily indicate the number of layers of material the tire is constructed of. As the need for greater fuel economy and the cost of materials rises, the tire manufacturers have gone to using lighter but stronger materials like Kevlar that provide the same strength that would have took several layers of materials years ago. Fewer layers also means less heat build-up, which is essential for longer tire life.

All that really matters is the weight capacity of the tire. The Kenda Trailer Tire # AM10235 that you referenced has a 2,040 lbs at 65 psi capacity. With trailer tires you have to have them inflated to their max psi in order for the tire to have it's full capacity.
