Troubleshooting Brake Controller that When Connected Activates Vehicle Brake Lights

Question:

my brakes lights stay on when vehicle is on. when i unplug the controller under the dash everything is back to normal.

Sounds like your brake controller has gone bad and is backfeeding power onto the stoplight switch which is then activating the brake lights of your vehicle.

If you sever the red wire of the controller and then test the end connected to the brake controller and there is 12 volts there then you know the brake controller has shorted out and needs to be replaced. Otherwise the 12 volt power source wire (black) is shorting out to this circuit and would need to be fixed as well.
