When hooked up to the trailer, everything works except the trailer breaks. The indicator shows the trailer is still disconnected. What could the problem be?

There's most likely an interruption in the connection between the brake controller and the trailer brakes. Begin by using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 on the blue wire exiting the rear of the controller. Slide the manual brake switch to the side while testing, you should show power on that wire with the switch on. Next, check the trailer connector on the vehicle. Make sure the connector is in good condition and isn't corroded or damaged. Use your circuit tester on the pin in the 5:00 position. You should be showing power on that pin when the manual brake switch on the controller is pushed, and the tester should place enough load on the circuit so that the controller reads a trailer. Clean the pins/contacts or replace the connector if needed.
Check the connector on the trailer, looking for corrosion or damage, and trace the brake output circuit (usually a blue wire) back to the brake assemblies. Make sure there's no loose or severed wires.
The final place to check is the brake magnets. You'll need to pull the hubs and examine the face of each brake magnet. If the magnet is worn away to the point where interior copper wiring is visible, the magnets should be replaced.
