Using Hitch Mounted Bike Rack on a 2014 Avalon Hybrid

Question:

Toyota specifically states not to use a hitch for anything including bikes, scooters, platform, trailer towing, period. I have a message into Toyota as to whether it will void the warranty but no answer yet. There must be a better way to mount a rack. Many years ago I saw racks that mounted on cross rails placed on the trunk lid. Its time someone did some serious research on this problem. If you aren't going to do it then I am going to do it myself.

We do not design or manufacture the bike racks we sell, you'd need to speak to the bike rack manufacturers about your idea for a trunk bike rack.

I've tried to find an online copy of the 2014 Avalon owner's manual to see what exactly they say on the matter, and have been unsuccessful. We're not in the habit of recommending folks ignore advice from the vehicle manufacturer, but I can tell you that many many folks have installed hitches on their Toyota Avalons and Camrys to carry bike racks without any negative result whatsoever.

If you don't want to go the hitch/ hitch mounted bike rack route, there are other bike carrying options. A trunk mount bike rack like the Thule OutWay # TH45JV is a great solution that's extremely easy to install and remove.

A roof rack could also be installed, providing a spot to install roof mounted bike racks. You can assemble a roof rack using the following parts:

Rhino Rack 2500 Series Crossbar, part # RRVA126B-2
Leg Kit, part # RRRLKVA
Vehicle specific clamp kit, part # DK361

RockyMounts offers some reasonably priced roof bike racks like the TieRod, part # RKY1012.
