Low Voltage on Curt Wiring Harness When Lights On

Question:

I have 2012 Ford Escape and have a Curtis part # s0612u-r1 shows 12v with headlights off then put headlights on voltage s to 5-6v

What you are describing seems to be common in some Curt trailer wiring harnesses that use a powered converter. If you were to pull the fuse out of the fuse holder it should not show power any more (with the vehicle on or off).

It sounds like you have a weak ground, loose butt connector or perhaps a crimp in a wire. Check all your ground wires to verify they are securely attached to a clean, bare metal surface. These checks should include the ground connector on the tow vehicle, the ground connector on the trailer, and the ground connection at each tail light assembly. Also check the condition of the wiring in between.
