Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 2006 Four Winds Trailer with 1,000 Pound Tongue Weight

Question:

I have a 2006 Four Winds 31B-DSL that I pull with a 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 Hd. The manufacturers specs says it has a 1018# dry hitch weight. Would it be better to go with a 1000# or 1200# system?

When choosing a weight distribution system, it is better to err on the side of safety. In this case, it means a higher capacity system. You never want a system with a capacity under what your tongue weight is. So in this case, I would not use a 1,000 pound system as it is not strong enough.

I recommend going with a system that is rated 800 to 1,500 pounds. Your dry tongue weight will be right in the middle of this capacity range and it will allow for several hundred more pounds once your trailer is fully loaded and ready to tow. Once it is fully loaded, make sure to recheck the actual tongue weight. Depending on how the trailer is loaded (more weight up front, for example, would make the tongue weight higher) will affect the tongue weight.

For your 2006 Four Winds trailer and 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD, I recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution Hitch System, # RP66130, and shank # RP54970. You could then use hitch ball # A-90 (2 inch diameter) or # 63836 (2-5/16 inch diameter).
