Does 27 Foot Trailer Need A Friction Sway Control Unit
Question:
I have a Reese hitch Model #54970. It has a hole for an anti-sway bar but was not sold one when I purchased it. Im towing a 27foot trailer 29foot from the ball hitch to the rear end. Loaded weight roughly 6000lbs. Would a sway bar be recommended and what type and model fit this type of hitch? Thanks

I'm assuming you're describing the weight distribution head, which would look like # 58333.
This weight distribution head has a hole on each side of where the trailer ball would attach for mounting a # 83660 friction sway unit. If your trailer is having sway problems caused by crosswinds or turbulence caused by oncoming or passing traffic, a friction sway unit can help. For trailers longer than 26 feet, we recommend two units, one on each side.
If your weight distribution head only has the mounting hole on one side, and the sway you've been experiencing isn't severe, you'll likely do okay using only one unit.
If your sway is more severe, then one unit isn't likely to help. In that case, you'll need a system that incorporates a more effective sway control component.
If your trailer's loaded weight is 6000 lbs, your trailer's tongue weight likely falls into the 600-900 lb range. If that's the case, the Reese Steadi-Flex, part # RP66560 would offer weight distribution with a much more effective sway control. The kit includes the weight distribution shank, but the properly sized trailer ball is sold separately. For a 2 inch ball, use part # A-90 or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 ball.
