Drawtite Activator Brake Controller 5504 Installation in 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup

Question:

I installed a Drawtite Activator on my 1995 Dodge 1500 pu, Idirect wired it just as the manufacturers instruction told me,and the only thing left to wire is the red lead that goes to the brake light switch. my vehicle has cruise control, and it appears that the cruise control switch and brake light switch are incorporated, there is like 5 or 6 dfferent wires going into this unit, which do I splice into, or do I have to do something different.

There will often be multiple wires in the area of the brake light switch and in your case with a vehicle that has cruise control that will account for some of those wires. Since auto makers do not always use the same color wire for a given function the only way to know for sure which wire is the correct one to connect to your Drawtite Activator brake controller # 5504 is to test.

You can use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to determine which of the 5 or 6 wires is the correct one to bring the brake light signal to the controller. You will test each wire while you press the brake pedal. The correct one is the wire that carries a signal ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed and at no other time. Some of those wires may carry a signal when your turn signals or lights are on but you want the one wire that carries a signal ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed.
