It is not a terribly difficult task but it will take some time and patience. We do have a video of a complete 7-Way and brake controller install on a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban. I have it linked below and I would recommend following this video, step by step. It is very thorough and if you follow it, the brake controller install and wiring should go pretty smoothly.
Though some of the 1996 Suburbans came with tow packages, the wiring was not complete and some of the wires can be hard to access. We recommend starting fresh with a new 7-Way and new wiring. It saves time and frustration from digging for old wires that may have corroded and not work very well anymore.
You would need a brake controller to start with. Our most popular and bestselling is the Tekonsha Prodigy, part # 90885. It is not the most basic brake controller we carry, nor is it the top of line. It includes the most useful features for average towers, and it is a good choice for most recreational towing applications. We also have a brake controller and 7-Way wiring kit, part # ETBC7. It includes everything you need to complete the installation of a 7-Way and brake controller. Both of these are featured in the video below.
If you do not already have one, a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 may also come in handy.
If you have further questions, write back and I will help however I can.
