Recommended Brake Controller for 2006 GMC Sierra Towing 26-Foot 5th Wheel Trailer
Question:
I have a 2006 GMC Sierra with the factory installed tow package. I have the factory wiring harness that came with the package. What brake controller is best for pulling a 2010 26ft 5th wheel trailer? If possible, what the the most economical that can handle the job and which unit do you recommend?

Comments from our many brake controller customers make it easy to recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller # 90885. This unit is well-proven and offers easy set-up and reliable consistent performance. It includes automatic-leveling ability for easier installation and built-in diagnostics to alert you of any problems. I can also assure you that Tekonsha provides outstanding after-sale service to its customers.
The P2 is a proportional-type controller that actually senses the braking of the tow vehicle and applies the trailer brakes in direct proportion for better stopping and reduced brake wear. Less costly time-delay type controllers always apply the same amount of braking power, no matter how hard you press the truck's pedal, which can actually cause more brake wear on both the tow vehicle and trailer. We recommend a proportional controller in most applications. Please refer to the linked article on brake controllers for more.
Installing the P2 in your truck is a simple plug-in event. All you need is the controller itself and the quick-connect wiring adapter # 3015-P. The linked install video shows you the process.
A lower-cost option is the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 which also uses the same harness for installation. This too a proportional controller but it gives up only some convenience features and mounting flexibility but not its basic performance quality which is comparable to the P2.
All controller options for your 2006 GMC Sierra can be seen on the link provided.
