What to Consider when Setting the Height of a Fifth Wheel Hitch Head

Question:

I just took the hitch off of my 07 gmc sierra, and would like to put it on a new 2015 gmc sierra, The problem is that the hitch is on the lowest of 4 holes and it still does not come up to the top of the side of the Pick Up. The camper is an 89 fleet wood prowler 5th wheel. and the connection to the hitch is as high as it can go, is there any thing that would raise the hitch to give me the clearence that is needed. thanks in advance

When determining bed rail to trailer overhang clearance you will want about 6 inches of clearance between the bed rails of the truck and the overhang of the trailer. It sounds like you are trying to set the height of your fifth wheel trailer head to be level with the tops of the bed rails.

If your setup has at least the 6 inches of clearance you should be just fine as long as your trailer is sitting level.

You can also adjust the height of the pin box on the trailer frame as well for more adjustability.

Basically you want the trailer to sit as level as possible front to back and have at least 6 inches of clearance between the bed rails and the trailer overhang.
