Troubleshooting Error Message Appearing When Using Wiring Kit 119250 on a 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Question:

I had a modulite unit installed on my 2006.5 GTI. No problems during the day. When I turn on the lights at night, I get a burned out idiot light and a computer messageright rear turn signal is not working. When I do an actual check, everything is working. For me, this is unacceptable. How can it be rectified?

The first thing I would do is to test the wires going into, and coming out of, the converter with no trailer connected. Start with the wires going into the converter. You will need a circuit tester like # PTW2993, or the one that came with the # 119250KIT.

Your 2006 Volkswagen GTI is not wired like many other vehicles and requires specific installation steps outlined below. Test for right turn and brake, left turn and brake, and running lights. The black wire should be attached to the battery, green should be right turn, yellow is left turn, brown is running lights but should be grounded with the white ground wire. The Red stop light wire connects to the stop and taillight wire (on either the left or right taillight). Make sure this wire carries both functions using the circuit tester. It will show 12 volts when the brake is pressed and 12 volts with the lights on. If everything is wired and functioning like it is supposed to be, then move on to testing the wires coming out of the converter. If something is wired differently make sure it is wired like I outlined above.

Test the wires coming out of the converter to make sure they have the correct functions. If they do not, there is probably a problem with the internal components of the converter and it will need to be replaced. Brown is running lights, green is right turn and brake, yellow is left turn and brake, and white is ground.

There might also be a problem with the trailer. There could be a ground problem at the right taillight assembly on the trailer. The rear taillights ground via the mounting studs. Check to make sure the ground is not loose and is free of dirt and corrosion.
