Pop-Up Camper Roof Rack for Transporting Kayaks on 1998 Forest River Coachman
Question:
We have a 1998 Coachman P/U, its pretty small I believe it has an 8ft box. We would like to carry our kayaks on top. I see that the P/U roof racks are mounted across the top. Would it be possible to mount them long ways and use J style kayak carriers or would this be too unstable? Our kayaks are small, both are under 10 feet. We also have an ac unit in the middle of the roof. Thanks!

Any kayak transported on a vehicle or trailer must be oriented in the front-to-back direction to minimize wind drag. Any other orientation would reduce stability of the kayaks and negatively affect your mileage.
I suggest you consider using a foam block type carrier such as one of those shown on the included link. The advantages of this type of carrier are their light weight, low cost, easy installation and that they avoid the expense and hassle of installing a rack that might interfere with your AC unit.
A great choice is the Malone Deluxe Foam Block Roof Kayak Carrier # MPG152. This and all other carriers include straps but I urge you to add an additional set of heavy-duty tie downs such as the Erickson # EM34420 for additional safety and peace of mind while you're heading down the highway.
If you care to email me a photo of your Coachman that will let me offer you additional recommendations.
