E1 Error Code On Hopkins Trailer Brake Controller on 2003 GMC Sierra
Question:
I installed a Agility 47295 on my GMC 2003 Sierra..The truck was prewired for a controller with an eight pin connector. The controller gives me an E 1 code when I press the brake even though the trailer is hooked up. I unplugged the controller an applied a 12 volt source to the trailer brake wire at the trailer connector. The trailer brakes then went on. Next my buddy hooked his truck to the trailer and everything worked fine. I used a store bought harness to connect the brake controller to the plug under the dash. Connected Black to Black, Dark Blue to Dark Blue, Red to Red. The brake lights, turn signals, running lights etc appear to work correctly. I keep getting the E 1 Code and am not able to adjust the percentage brakes. I would appreciate any suggestions you might be able to suggest. Thank You.

If you press the manual button on the Hopkins Agility brake controller, # HM47295, and the trailer brakes work, then the problem is in the position of the red wire on the wiring harness under the dash.
You might have a wrong brake controller wiring harness. The correct harness is the Universal Brake Control Wiring Adapter 2003 - 06 Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, # 3015-S.
If you unplug the harness and check the wire locations on the connector, with the blue locking clip in the down position the red wire should be in the top left position. If it is in the bottom right position then it will need to be moved.
To get the red wire out you will need to press on a very small locking tab on the connection side of the terminal. This is the only change that will need to be made. Remember to reinstall the blue locking clip.
When the connector is wired properly the brake controller will be activated when the brake pedal is pressed.
I am sending a link to the correct wiring harness that shows the wire locations.
If the wires are hooked up correctly or that does not solve your problem then you might need to check the blue output wire at the brake controller. You will need to cut the blue wire output wire at the brake controller and test it to see if there is power going out on the blue wire when the manual slide is pressed or the brake pedal is pressed.
If the manual slide works and the connector is wired properly and there is no output on the blue wire then it is probably a controller problem. If there is output on the blue wire then the problem is further back on the blue wire or maybe corrosion inside the trailer connector.
