How to Bypass Factory Integrated Brake Controller on a 2012 Ram Mega Cab
Question:
Good morning. Ive been told that it is possible to bypass or remove the integrated brake controller that is installed in my 2012 Dodge Ram Mega Cab. It is a horrible design and installed in the wrong spot for convenience. As of lately it is not functioning correctly as I have to put the controller up to 10 in order to get anything out of the brakes. Half the time it feels as if nothing is even happening. I have brought the truck to Dodge and they say everything is fine but wont replace the controller even tho it is still under warranty and only has 15,500 miles on truck. I would like to just bypass it and install an after market one. I was referred to your site through a friend who said you guys gave him some great advice. Hopefully you can help me out. Thank you in advance.

You can bypass the factory brake controller on a 2012 Dodge Ram but there are a few things to do first. I have explained it below and also included a link to an FAQ that will help.
To install an aftermarket brake controller on a 2012 Dodge Ram that has the factory integrated controller you will have to disconnect the ITBM (Integrated Trailer Brake Module). Doing so will turn on a warning lamp on the instrument cluster. In order to disconnect the ITBM and not get the warning lamp, your local Dodge dealer will have to reconfigure the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), of the truck. Once the TIPM has been reconfigured, and the ITBM has been unplugged, you can use a vehicle specific brake control harness such as the Tekonsha # 3021-P, to install the aftermarket brake control.
To disconnect the ITBM, you or the dealer will need to contact the Business Center to remove the sales code (XHC). The TIPM will need to be reconfigured. Once the sales code has been disabled you can disconnect the ITBM electrical connector, under the dash, without getting the warning lamp. Basically the computer needs to be told that the truck does not have a brake controller so you can unplug it without getting that warning light.
Then to install an aftermarket brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. This is a reliable controller that is easy to set up and use and is compatible with electric and electric over hydraulic braking systems. Use wiring harness # 3021-P. This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicles built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.
